The Results of Anger
The Results of Anger
by Pamela Harper
One peaceful Saturday morning while enjoying my addiction (a fruit smoothie), I hear in the background a most disturbing sound. A man and woman are engaged in parking lot rage. The woman yells, "you are a (bleep)". The man, sounding perplexed replies, "but you are the one who cut me off and ..." She interrupts him with more shrieking profanity, "well you are a (bleep) for yelling at me."

Angry outbursts rarely sound logical. More significantly is what happens to the individual as a result of emotional energy emerging from this "normal" feeling. Yes, the energy is expelled to a certain degree, but what about the physiological results of manufacturing and processing this kind of toxic energy.

I learned in nursing school of the tons of research compiled to support the conclusion that indeed, emotions play as large a role in physiology as genetic coding. Keeping patients calm and relaxed is a key component to healing. Angry people are more susceptible to disease, due to the byproducts released. Emotion is nothing more than an energy stimulus response which produces a bio-chemical change, these messages travel to every cell in the body.

Anger in any form is self-defeating. Angry thoughts, words, or deeds create deficit in the life force. There is truth in the statement, "that makes my blood boil".

I treat people who have been angry about the same dumb darn thing for 50 years. They call it righteous indignation, or justifiable rage. They perceive that someone has wronged them and they are never going to forgive or forget. Who, is being punished over and over again? Every time they rehash that past event, a detrimental bio-chemical reaction occurs.

Each time anger rears its ugly head and knocks you off your serene platform, it is baffling and defeating. You certainly didn't plan to ruin a god portion of your day feeling up tight and out of control. Your stomach is in a knot, your heart rate increases, and your head may begin to ache.

All of the muscles in your body are rigid. You are more likely to succumb to infection because your immune system is compromised. With a single angry thought, you can provide dis...ease. You can claim control of your emotional well being by refusing to get 'sucked in'.

We can decide at any moment to remain calm even in the face of someone else's hostility. We recognize and accept that their displeasure belongs only, to them. We are free to love and care for ourselves at all times. If we choose to participate in their 'insanity' we lose physical stamina.

In the case of patients or clients who are fighting a chronic disease, I make them an audio tape to soothe their body and mind. Relaxation is a precursor to perfect health. I find the most effective ways to hold onto my peace of mind and remain self-nurturing is to:

Ask myself, is this an emotional state that will enhance my body's ability to fight off disease? If someone is inviting me to "dance the dance of range", I many have to leave him on the dance floor.

Imagine that I am wrapped in a warm blanket of protection until I can gather loving thoughts for myself and ESPECIALLY for that other person. Forgiveness is necessary for my body to thrive.

Appreciate this momentary upset as a "lesson to learn". I will be stronger for the next. We can never blame anyone or anything for our discomfort, if we do not play the blame game we lose personal power. Life is a series of choices. If a circumstance occurs that truly appears out of my control I will acknowledge the hurt, let it go, be wiser, and move forward. If we allow others to pull us away from our higher goals, we take a step backward and use up valuable time finding peace again.

We have arrived in human evolution at a time of profound self-awareness and opportunity for even greater planetary healing. If I sincerely desire world peace, then I must insist upon personal peace within me. My physical health improves with each loving thought I give to myself and others.
